Virginia governor Tim Kaine responds to Bush's speech here:
The failure of the federal government to implement and enforce a rational immigration policy has resulted in a confusing patchwork of state and local efforts. We should welcome those who seek to lawfully join and contribute to our American family. At the same time, we must ensure that our homeland defense efforts begin with consistent federal action to protect our borders.
At first glance you might think it sounds more American than Bush's take on immigration. Then, you slap your forehead as you realize that Tim Kaine supports illegal immigration and you realize it's just a different flavor of dreck from that provided by Bush.

"We should welcome those who seek to lawfully join and contribute to our American family."
All of them? How many? When, i.e. at what population level, will it end? I've always been uncomfortable with the generally accepted belief that unless economic output is growing constantly -- and it seems the kind of growth expected cannot be achieved by improvements in productivity alone, which means a constantly growing population too -- then we have a big problem. I mean, this can't go on forever...Can it?

Tim Kaine just became Governor of VA. What was the biggest issue? A combination of traffic and transportation. Why is this an issue? Surging population especially in Northern VA is causing long commutes, high-priced housing, pollution, and the usual problems in schools, crime, neighborhoods, etc. What is largely fueling this population surge? Massive amounts of immigration - legal and illegal. Does TK's quote above make any kind of sense? Of course not, but it gives certain people a warm, fuzzy feeling as long as the day labor site and the boarding houses aren't in their neighborhood.
