Denver public school system dumbs down "highly gifted" program to be more "equitable" (ACLU)

Jeremy Meyer of the Denver Post offers 'Minorities, poor get "highly gifted" lift/A new DPS system awards some kids an extra boost to make things more equitable', but don't worry it's even worse than it sounds:
...To determine who gets into [their "highly gifted" program], the [Denver Public School district] previously relied on oral tests that measure a student's reasoning and IQ.

To make things more equitable, the district now relies on a sum of measures to determine eligibility into the highly gifted program — cognitive tests, annual assessments, reading tests and teacher nominations. Next year, the district will consider artwork and writings.

Also, students get extra points toward entry into the program if English is their second language or if they receive federal meal benefits — a measure of poverty.

For example, a student who scores as low as the 75th percentile on cognitive tests could be considered, [Diana Howard, principal at Polaris at Ebert, the district's sole elementary school for the highly gifted and talented] said. Previously, that child would not have been admitted...
"Gifted" should mean smart, not artistically talented, since those are entirely different traits and in many cases not present in the same person. Those who are able to take challenging math classes may not do that well in painting classes, and vice versa. They might end up having two different math classes: those for the students who are really gifted, and those who've just been declared "gifted" by the administrators.

And, by including subjective measures such as assessments and nominations in the mix, they're opening themselves to teachers and administrators deciding to give an "extra boost" to certain less-qualified students who hold left-leaning political views or who are of the same race as the teacher or administrator. All the other issues involving affirmative action - and its pushers like Howard and the Denver Post - apply as well.

And, as might be expected:
The American Civil Liberties Union in California last year threatened to sue the Tustin Unified School District over low numbers of Latinos and African-Americans in the district's gifted programs.
Then, we find out that one of DPS's officials needs to go back to math class and learn that school resources are not infinite:
"If there are a limited number of slots in those programs, then the wealthier student who is excluded will always feel wrongly excluded if their test scores were higher than a lower-income student or Hispanic student who was included," [Joshua Wyner, executive vice president of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation] said.

Jaime Aquino, DPS's chief academic officer, said adding more highly gifted students will not exclude others.

"Every school gets an allocation per student who is identified as gifted and talented, so they can provide them some enrichment or some differentiated services within the building," he said. "You have several magnet programs throughout the district. Many still have room. It's just whether the parents want to send their kids to those schools."
Hopefully they'll get sued either by one of the American counterparts to the ACLU or by some of those parents whose children have been excluded from the program.

Civil rights solved, lawmakers push for diversity in Capitol statuary collection

From this:
Just nine statues in the Capitol's 100-piece Statuary Hall collection depict minorities, a figure that some lawmakers claim is woefully inadequate.

Concerned about the lack of diversity, the legislators are spearheading efforts to make changes to the Capitol's artwork...
Those quoted as supporting a de facto quota system for statues include Reps. Charlie Rangel, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Jesse Jackson Jr., Joe Baca, and Mike Honda. I'll admit that they have a slight point, even if they won't admit that this is a completely trivial issue and they're engaged in a power play. But, it least it will mean that Baca will have less time to work on opening the borders.

ACLU loses church/state separation case (Jesus painting in courthouse)

Their Communist paymasters friends and allies are probably still steamed about this September 10 story:
A disputed portrait of Jesus Christ will remain at the Slidell city courthouse in Louisiana after a federal judge refused to grant a demand by the American Civil Liberties Union to have the painting removed...

In response [to the ACLU], the city of Slidell mounted additional portraits of 15 of history's preeminent lawgivers alongside the Jesus painting [which had been there for a decade]. The framed portraits added on Aug. 31 included those of Confucius, Hammurabi, Moses, Charlemagne, and Sir William Blackstone. Alongside the 16 framed portraits are a reproduction of the U.S. Constitution and a mounted explanation of the various figures in the paintings...

Block a bulldozer for Al Gore! (civil disobedience against global warming)

According to Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times (Times Select; excerpt) Al Gore not only "vibrates with passion [about global warming]", he wants young people to take direct action. Now, certainly, civil disobedience is perfectly justifiable in many cases, but I don't think Big Wooden Al is either Gandhi or Thoreau, even as he tries to assume their mantles for his own ends.
I ran into Al Gore at a climate/energy conference this month, and he vibrates with passion about this issue -- recognizing that we should confront mortal threats even when they don't emanate from Al Qaeda.

"We are now treating the Earth's atmosphere as an open sewer," he said, and (perhaps because my teenage son was beside me) he encouraged young people to engage in peaceful protests to block major new carbon sources.

"I can't understand why there aren't rings of young people blocking bulldozers," Mr. Gore said, "and preventing them from constructing coal-fired power plants."

Al Gore now available in holographic form

Al Gore - before John Kerry the president-in-exile of the United States of America - opened the Tokyo version of Live Earth... as a hologram! Concertgoers invariably said, "kamisata wa merari, holographic-a Al Gore!", which roughly translated means, "The holographic version is even more creepy than the real version!" On the clip he stresses his globalist credentials by literally holding a floating Earth; I had a flashback to watching the (IIRC) United Nations-produced "Big Blue Marble".

Hopefully the holographic data has been replicated on hundreds of servers worldwide so that Gore can continue to spread his global message for centuries to come.

Take the Al Gore Live Earth Climate Pledge!

Al Gore has a simple demand: that everyone on Earth takes the Al Gore Live Earth Climate Pledge! Whether you're sitting in a theatre, a theater, a [pub/bar/saloon/cantina/lokal] or whatever, raise your right hand NOW and repeat after Al Gore:

Please don't mind the sudden cut when he enumerates the Pledge Conditions; that's only there to help you remember the Conditions. While some might complain about the demand about signing an international agreement, Big Brother assures us it's necessary. As for turning in those who refuse to take the Pledge, that's necessary to avoid the Coming Global Superstorm. And, if you're worried about that nagging feeling that Al Gore isn't just interested in climate change but has bigger things in mind, you're probably right.

UPDATE: I realize watching the Two Minute Gore can put anyone in a bad mood, so as an antidote let me suggest the anti-Al of the Movement, Sexy Simran Sethi:

UPDATE 2: As Live Aid, or whatever it is, continues on somewhere, I now require you to read "How Celebrities Apply Eco-Consciousness to Everyday Living":

Actors such as Morgan Freeman, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst drive electric or fuel-efficient cars. Canadian singer Alanis Morisette, who earned the 2003 Environmental Media Association Missions in Music Award for campaigning against oil drilling in Alaska, has a solar home and drives a Prius... ...Sitcom star Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her husband, writer/producer Brad Hall, have been environmentalists for years... ...Cate Blanchett's Sydney home is solar-powered... ...Former Agent 007 Pierce Brosnan has been active in environmental causes for years... ...Edward Norton, who grew up with environmentalist parents [ed. note: a so-called "Green Diaper Baby"], has taken eco-consciousness from his solar home to the homes of others by spreading the word among other actors...

WTF: ADL's "No Place for Hate" campaign

Via this we learn that the Anti-Defamation League has been conducting a "No Place for Hate" campaign in New England with the Massachusetts Municipal Association since 1999 [1]. Cities in New England and elsewhere can join the program ([2][3][4]), and, as long as they conduct three events designed to show they're free of hate and that they respect diversity, they get a nifty sign that they can attach to a post (not provided) at the entrance to their town. Of course, as the second link above shows, the ADL has a rather flexible definition of "hate", with one required to support illegal immigration in order to rid oneself of all vestiges of "hate".

Campaigns like this are an attempt to enforce far-left ideology, and their effectiveness can be seen from the news story:
When Ralph Filicchia came across a "No Place for Hate" sign on a pole outside Town Hall, he was, to put it in his own words "offended."

On Tuesday, he came before the council with a message and a plea to take down the sign and rescind a Town Council proclamation honoring Watertown as a "No Place for Hate" community.

"The proclamation is discriminatory and a violation and infringement upon my civil rights as an American citizen," he said. "I want the right to speak out without being guilty of a hate crime."
Such campaigns are designed to make one wonder what exactly Filicchia could object to. Is he a... hater? Is he a... racist? There isn't that much difference between this and cities that would declare themselves to be "No Place for Satan", then define or imply that all those who aren't fundamentalist Christians are Satanists.

Note that the ADL has a related "Communities of Respect" program (both NPFH and COR are trademarked by the way). Sugar Land, Texas was the latest to be converted, including asking his residents to sign an oversized "Resolution of Respect." [5] Earlier, a "Rally for Respect" was held; choose 'view image' on the center picture to see schoolkids holding up "Respect" signs. [6]

Professor sends link to Pat Buchanan website, gets put on leave

But, it wasn't just any old link:
The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) has placed a professor on forced administrative leave and has recommended that he be terminated for e-mailing a Thanksgiving message to his colleagues last November. On the day before Thanksgiving, Professor Walter Kehowski sent out the text of George Washington's "Thanksgiving Day Proclamation of 1789" and a link to the webpage where he'd found it—on Pat Buchanan's web log. After several recipients complained of being offended by the e-mail, MCCCD found Kehowski guilty of violating the district's Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policy and technology usage standards. Kehowski then contacted the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) for help...

...On November 22, 2006, tenured mathematics professor Walter Kehowski at Glendale Community College—part of the MCCCD system—sent an e-mail containing Washington's "Thanksgiving Day Proclamation of 1789" to all MCCCD employees using a district-wide listserv designated for "announcements." Within weeks, five MCCCD employees filed harassment charges against Kehowski, claiming his message was "hostile" and "derogatory" because it contained a link to Buchanan's website, where the conservative Buchanan had also posted his criticisms of immigration policies.
Feel free to contact them and let them know what you think:

Andrew Sullivan Syndrome (Don Imus)

Regarding the Don Imus matter, Andrew Sullivan says:

...Punishing someone for calling college women "whores" - especially those who have beaten the odds and are role models for other back girls and women - is not a new step in political correctness. It's applying a very old American standard of fairness and decency, which now applies to all Americans, regardless of race or gender. This was the voice of mainstream America speaking...

And, in this post he prints a letter from a reader implying that those concerned about double-standards do so because they want to use the "n-word".

Obviously, the letter writer has made an obvious error, which Sully - oddly enough - either didn't notice or didn't think his readers would. Namely, perhaps the issue is not so much that they want to use the "n-word", but that they wonder why the same punishment meted out to errant white people is not meted out to the endless string of blacks and Hispanics who've said far worse things than what Imus did.

Just as obviously, the Sully's "standard of fairness and decency" do not apply to errant People of Color. If they did, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have been driven from public life years ago.

For another example, the chairman of the California Democratic Party (Art Torres) said this in the 90s:

"[Proposition] 187 was the last gasp of white America in California."

If he said that today, would he be Imus'ed? I highly doubt it. The media would cover it up and if that didn't work they'd try to downplay it.

Torres even has a bit of an Imus connection; currently at cadem.org we read the following:

Imus Off The Air... Thank you to the thousands of Americans who spoke out! Because so many people expressed their outrage by taking action, such as signing our boycott petition, CBS has fired Don Imus, sending the strongest possible message that demeaning any group in the name of entertainment will not be tolerated.

Chairman Torres would like to share this letter of thanks he received from Elizabeth Badger-Bartels, CEO/Founder of the Minority Outreach Committee.

I'm sure Sully's "standard of fairness and decency" will apply the next time a Democrat, "liberal", or leftist says something far worse than anything Imus ever said.

How to be a Gramscian in fifty easy links (race awareness, anti-racist, etc. etc.)

Would you too like to increase your race awareness and work on your anti-racist viewpoint while at the same time learning about transracialism, white privilege and Oppression?

I knew you would! That's why I recommend visiting this page and following all the links at the "super-sized link post" from the "10th Erase Racism Carnival": blogher.org/node/16991

Your host is the fetching Carmen Van Kerckhove, who's the co-founder and president of New Demographic (newdemographic.com), "an anti-racism training company that goes beyond diversity buzzwords to tackle the real issues behind race and racism.". She podcasts at "Addicted to Race", and her other sites include "Racialicious", "Anti-Racist Parent", and "Race Changers".

Now, I'd like you to express how much you hate racism. Let it all out! Stamp out that racism! Spend a good two minutes doing that.

Tennie Pierce Part 2: supervisors sue city

Tennie Pierce is the black firefighter who sued Los Angeles for racial discrimination. As a prank, fellow firemen put some dog food in his spaghetti and he ate two bites of it. For that, the L.A. City Council voted to give him $2.7 million. Oh, and by the way: at the time he didn't think it was racial, he'd played several pranks on other firefighters, and his nickname was "Big Dog".

The Council backtracked after bad publicity and has since hired outside lawyers to fight Pierce's suit. The original settlement was "negotiated" by City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo; the outside lawyers could cost as much as $750,000.

Now, Eric Leonard (no permalink) says:
Two Los Angeles City Fire Department captains accused of racial harassment by firefighter Tennie Pierce have filed a reverse racial discrimination lawsuit against the City accusing fire department administrators of unfairly punishing them.

Court documents filed jointly by captains Chris Burton and John Tohill say they were suspended and transferred without due process after Pierce accused them of taking part in a fire station prank in October, 2004...

Burton says he was summarily demoted, transferred, and suspended for 30 days and says despite his request for an, "advocate investigation," of the discipline, no formal investigation of the Pierce incident or Burton's discipline was ever conducted by the fire department.

Tohill says he was suspended for 24 days and transferred, again, he says, without a formal investigation.

The Hispanic firefighter who put the dog food in Pierce's spaghetti was suspended for only six days, they say...

Congressional White Caucus: for whites only

From this:
Freshman Rep. Stephen I. Cohen, D-Tenn., is not joining the Congressional White Caucus after several current and former members made it clear that a black lawmaker was not welcome.

"I think they're real happy I'm not going to join," said Cohen, who succeeded Rep. Harold Ford, D-Tenn., in a majority-white Memphis district. "It's their caucus and they do things their way. You don't force your way in. You need to be invited."

Cohen said he became convinced that joining the caucus would be "a social faux pas" after seeing news reports that former Rep. William Lacy Clay Sr., D-Mo., a co-founder of the caucus, had circulated a memo telling members it was "critical" that the group remain "exclusively European-American."

...The bylaws of the caucus do not make race a prerequisite for membership, a House aide said, but no non-white member has ever joined.

Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., who is black, tried in 1975 when he was a sophomore representative and the group was only 6 years old...

BNP Ballerina taunted: "many more of us than you"

The case of the BNP Ballerina (England's Simone Clarke) spins and twirls, with this column defending her political rights and discussing a protest by far-lefties at one of her performances:

Despite her fear of mass immigration, Clarke has an immigrant boyfriend of Chinese-Cuban descent, also a dancer; there is a hint of inconsistency here surely, and the BNP certainly finds it a touch embarrassing. And then the protesters in the street [presumably Unite Against Fascism activists], who say that ethnic English people's fear of immigration is nothing but irrational racism, rather undermined their own case by shouting "We are Muslim, black and Jew, there are many more of us than you" — by this threat confirming that a fear of mass immigration is not merely irrational racism. Brilliant.

"BNP ballerina" blitzed by Gramscian goons

Ballerina Simone Clarke of the English National Ballet is coming under a large amount of fire from a small number of sources due to her membership in the British National Party (BNP). The Guardian, other papers, and the Gramscian establishment are trying to get her fired over her private political views.

That party is apparently "far right", in the law & order, isolationism, halting all immigration and so forth sense. The elites of England might be attempting to misrepresent them, but there's a good chance they're a bit closer to thugs in suits. Sorting that out is left to the English, but they are apparently a legal political party.

A seven-month long undercover "investigation" by the Guardian's Ian Cobain resulted in an article with nothing overly shocking ("Exclusive: inside the secret and sinister world of the BNP", link; there may be more in their print edition). That 12/21 article is where it was revealed that Clarke was a member.

She refused comment except to give one interview, which I believe was in 12/30's "The BNP Ballerina" by Elizabeth Sanderson (link). In that she said she's been a member for 18 months.

To recap: she's been a member for a long time, her membership was only revealed after an undercover investigation, and she gave one interview attempting to explain why she was a member.

With that in mind, now comes al-Guardian again with 1/1's "BNP ballerina defies rising clamour to sack her" (link):

The interview has caused fresh difficulties for the ENB, which was able to deflect criticism about Clarke's BNP membership by insisting that her stance was an entirely private one. The company, which is publicly funded and is therefore obliged by the Race Relations Act of 2000 to promote good race relations, will be asked to explain how one of its highest profile employees was able to use her position as a platform for the far right party.

Obviously, the Guardian is engaging in their own form of thuggery, since she wasn't using "her position as a platform" and if the Guardian had not revealed her membership no one might have known about it. And, they're attempting to use state power to enforce their own far-left Gramscian viewpoint and punish someone for their heretofore private membership in a legal political party. Their attempts are as transparently fake as this photo of her in front of Buckingham Palace.

Only four voices in the "rising clamour" are quoted, one anonymously. Lee Jasper, "equalities director for the mayor of London and chairman of the National Assembly Against Racism" thinks "she should be sacked". Inayat Bunglawala from the Muslim Council of Britain thinks she's abusing her position. Jon Cruddas, "Labour MP for Dagenham in east London" thinks she's ignoring the BNP's "underbelly".

And:

A spokeswoman for the Commission for Racial Equality, which polices race relations legislation, said it was monitoring events. "We will be interested to see what action the ENB takes given that it has a member expressing such views in public."

Apparently there as here the major political parties support massive immigration - legal and illegal - even if some may talk a good game. And, apparently the BNP is the only party willing to go against the Gramscian flow. And, presumably many or most Britons oppose those policies imposed on them by the elites. It shouldn't be surprising that some would seek an alternative and that the elites would attempt to punish those who get involved with that alternative.

"Jane Elliott and her Blue-Eyed Devil Children"

From this:
Why does racial diversity training, whose deleterious effects have been chronicled in these pages more than once, seem like a children's group exercise, a sadist's version of "patty cake, patty cake, baker's man?" There's a good reason: It is a children's exercise. At least that's how it began and operated for many years until the pillars of our society became convinced of its necessity. We have a retired school teacher named Jane Elliott to thank for the leftward infantilizing of the American mind...

...Jane Elliott is our nation's long-reigning Dominatrix of Diversity. For nearly 40 years this native of rural Iowa has been engaged in a Torquemada-style quest to eradicate racism, real or imagined, from every nook and cranny of American life. She casts a mighty long shadow. Every time a corporation forces new employees – at least Caucasian ones – to endure intensive and prolonged anti-bias training, it is ratifying the legacy of Jane Elliott. Every time a college requires incoming white freshmen to be "cured" of racial, ethnic and religious prejudices presumably lurking within, it is fulfilling Elliott's vision...

Airstrip One: veiled Muslim woman to give Christmas speech on UK's Channel 4

Channel 4 is a "publicly-owned not-for-profit broadcaster" out of the UK. Since 1993 they've been offering an alternative to the Queen's XMas speech, and this year will feature a veiled Muslim woman:
[Khadija... a freelance lecturer in Islamic studies and the Koran... and a Zimbabwean-born British citizen], who has been wearing the full veil - or niqab - for 10 years, has been given the slot.

The message will reflect a year in which the wearing of religious clothing and symbols have "dominated the news agenda", said a Channel 4 spokesman.

...The right to wear the niqab made the headlines earlier this year when the Leader of the House of Commons, Jack Straw, said that it hindered communication.

The niqab - Arabic for "full veil" - means covering up completely, including gloves and a face covering which leaves just a slit for the eyes.

Channel 4's spokesman also said that the controversy has "generated a debate about multiculturalism, secularism and integration - a debate in which British Muslims have played a key role and one that will shape the future of British society".

Infiltrator watch: DailyKos meets sharia law

The DailyKos user "cador" continues his trolling of DailyKos with this (warning: pics posted in comments NSFW):
One of the many benefits of immigration is the fact that we can adopt many non-Western concepts of law and justice which are much more progressive than traditionally oppressive, patriarchal, racist and sexist European laws...

[quotes from "Sharia law is spreading as authority wanes"]

...Let us replace the tyranny of Pat Robertson and the Religious REICH with the freedom-giving Sharia law which is known to be tolerant of womyn's rights and the GLBT community. Pym Fortuyn would certainly approve.

Although we here at the kos community have many misgivings about the Resident-in-Thief, George "DUMBYA" Bush, we should urge the newly elected Democratic Congress to implement his guest worker program so that we can bring in many more immigrants to enrich and improve our culture...

Tookie Williams... the stage play!

On December 12, a group of actors and activists will be reenacting the events leading up to the execution of gang co-founder Tookie Williams. The stage play will be performed in Berkeley, California, and a troupe of actors will reenact the fateful 1979 evening during which he shotgunned four innocent victims to death, terrorizing South Central L.A. and later resulting in his lengthy imprisonment.

Just kidding.

Actually:
The Black Repertory Group will re-enact the execution of Crips co-founder and murderer Stanley Tookie Williams to mark the one-year anniversary of the former gang leader's death by lethal injection.

Williams' longtime friend and co-author Barbara Becnel and Shirley Neal, a vice president at The Africa Channel, are co-producing the Dec. 12 event to show what they witnessed as "dramatic and horrific."

"This is what the state of California is doing in the name of its people," Becnel told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "We were there. We saw it. Now we want the public to see what we saw."

Happy International Day for Tolerance!

Today is the United Nation's "International Day for Tolerance". Obviously, anyone who's against such a day is - by definition - intolerant. And, intolerance has no place here or elsewhere, and will be extirpated as soon as it is spotted. As Our Leader Kofi Annan is fond of saying, "in our globalizing world, tolerance is more essential than ever."

This site would like to stress that our Mission Statement - as approved by a plenary of our member states - has issued its complete support for this Day, and that the only thing we're intolerant of... is intolerance! And, mean people.

This site is also working with NGO (non-governmental organizations), political officials, cultural leaders, and other interested parties to ensure that all persons celebrate this day fully. We are currently working to ensure that school curricula throughout the World teach the principles of Tolerance, observe this day as the landmark in Human History that it is, and require all schoolchildren to recite the Pledge of Tolerance every day.

We encourage every Person to print out and keep in their wallet, purse, satchel, kilt bag, fanny pack, or similar ethno-cultural-specific container the thoughts of St. Maarten Cultural Affairs Commissioner Louie Laveist:

"I am very concerned with global trends in the rise of intolerance, extremism and racism... Our island nation is a multicultural society which makes us rich due to this diversity. Each and everyone who has made St. Maarten their home must strive to uphold the principles of tolerance, pluralism and mutual respect for a peaceful coexistence. Those who are not able to abide by the aforementioned have no place in our homeland."

Now, let us sing.

Academic McCarthyism from the SPLC?

Say it ain't so! However, consider the case of Kevin MacDonald, a Professor of Psychology at California State University–Long Beach. If he didn't have tenure he'd probably be looking for another job, because the Southern Poverty Law Center has mounted a vigorous campaign against him which appears to be all or almost all based on smears. (The SPLC is also indirectly linked to the Mexican government and is also involved in a Georgia lawsuit which would have the effect of helping Mexico send us more of their citizens.)

For the shortest possible summary of this case, take a look at the section concerning MacDonald from the "Thirteen Scariest People in America" (alternet.org/story/43586); that section was written by two people from the SPLC. Then, take a look at Kevin MacDonald's rebuttal. Then, for the longer version, see "Heidi Does Long Beach: The SPLC vs. Academic Freedom".

If you see any MSM sources presenting the SPLC as a trustworthy source, please at least send them the first link and suggest they do a bit more research.

Kweisi Mfume: "right people" needed for Maryland

It wasn't too many decades ago when "the right kind of people" was a racist code word. Guess what? It still is. In Maryland, Democrat Rep. Ben Cardin (white) won his Senate seat against Michael Steele (black). In the primary, Cardin beat former NAACP president Kweisi Mfume.

Now:

Saying Maryland Democratic leaders must do more to encourage black candidates so "we do not have another Michael Steele problem," Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean on Thursday criticized the state party's lack of diversity on its recent winning tickets...

Mfume doesn't think he got as much support as he could have, and says:

"I agree with [Chairman Gov. Dr. Howard Dean M.D.], and we're all Democrats who believe more than anything else that the Democratic Party really holds the best hope for that kind of racial and gender diversity... At the same time it's not enough to just get people in the process. They really do have to be the right people who really do care about the communities in this state."

Translating that into Alabama-in-the-50s-speak is left as an exercise.

Firefighter eats dog food, gets $2.7 million

From this:
A black firefighter who was served dog food in his spaghetti by fellow firefighters will be paid more than $2.7 million to settle a lawsuit alleging racial harassment within the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The award, approved on an 11-1 vote Wednesday by the Los Angeles City Council, is the latest in a recent string of settlements of lawsuits by firefighters claiming discrimination and harassment and retaliation against those who complain.

...Firefighter Tennie Pierce, 51, alleged in his lawsuit that Firefighter Jorge Arevalo mixed canned dog food into Pierce's dinner at their Westchester station two years ago; that Capt. John Tohill purchased the dog food; and that Capt. Chris Burton knew about the prank but didn't warn Pierce. All three men were present when Pierce ate the dog food.

Pierce "took a large bite, at which time he noticed the other firefighters were laughing and making noises," the lawsuit says. He took a second bite, then demanded to know what was in his food, "but no one would tell him." Pierce then left the kitchen "with his co-workers laughing at him."

A Fire Department investigation suggested the incident was intended to "humble" Pierce — who stands 6 feet 5 — after his team won a fire station volleyball game. A lawyer for one of the defendants initially called the incident "a good-natured prank ... [not] in any way motivated by race."

But a UC Santa Cruz professor who was hired by Pierce's attorney to review department records of discrimination complaints said the prank was clearly intended to "humiliate and dehumanize" Pierce.

"The association of a black man and dog food resonates with the deep historical roots of slavery and the corresponding dehumanization," said sociologist David Wellman [bio], co-author of "Whitewashing Race: Colorblind Policies in a Color Conscious America."
One would think if there were any specific association between African-Americans and dog food you'd be able to find it within the first 100 searches. The "expert witness'" stated speciality is finding "hidden" (white) racism, which is reminiscent of witch hunters using various clues to find witches.

The only Councilpersonage voting against the award was Dennis Zine. John and Ken of KFI will be leading a campaign to send cans of dog food to the other 11 Councilbeings who voted for the award.

England: Town council bans use of phrase "political correctness"

Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire (somewhere in England) has or had a 44-page booklet for their employees containing various far-left Gramscian suggestions, including a section banning the use of the phrase "political correctness". I couldn't find it on their site, and the new head of the council says they're no longer using it, but it does help illustrate Britain's slow Orwellian slide:
It states:'Political correctness is often used to describe what some of us think are unnecessary changes which don't really bother anyone.

'The term political correctness was coined in 1988 by John O'Sullivan III, who was a member of the Ku Klux Klan. He was making an after dinner speech complaining about how Black Americans were being allowed to take the jobs traditionally reserved for the white majority because of a wave of political correctness.

'Since then the phrase political correctness has almost universally been used to decry changes which aim to prevent offensive behaviour.'

It goes on to say because this takes the form of 'blaming the victim, denying peoples experience or expressing the view of a popular majority,' using the phrase can represent a 'physical attack.'
Other suggestions from the booklet at the link, such as their opposition to -man words like "policeman."

Note that a customer service satisfaction survey of a sort contains several complaints about political correctness:

UK: Hardline Muslim teacher now national school inspector

From this:
A hardline Muslim teacher who caused a furore by denouncing pupils for celebrating Christmas [at Washwood Heath Secondary School in Birmingham] has been made a Government schools inspector.

Israr Khan's Ofsted appointment was described by a former colleague as 'absolutely astonishing'...

...It has been claimed that Washwood Heath school was then a 'hotbed of Islamic fundamentalism'. Rashid Rauf - the airline terror bomb suspect whose extradition is currently being sought from Pakistan - was a pupil there at that time...

The "Strategic Plan to Foster Immigration to Francophone Minority Communities"

Or: When your country isn't divided enough, double down.

From this:
The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, along with the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of International Cooperation and Minister for La Francophonie and Official Languages, today launched the Strategic Plan to Foster Immigration to Francophone Minority Communities. The five year plan seeks to increase immigration of French-speaking people to Francophone communities, and to help them to settle in their new surroundings.

"Immigration is a key factor in the growth and vitality of Francophone communities outside of Quebec," said Minister Solberg."Our government plans to attract more French-speaking immigrants to these communities and to work with our partners to help newcomers succeed."

"By participating in the implementation of the Strategic Plan to Foster Immigration to Francophone Minority Communities, our new Government contributes directly to Canada's linguistic duality and to the vitality of our country's Francophone communities," said Minister Verner...
I've only been to Canada twice, and both times it was like visiting a foreign country. So, I'm no expert. But, it seems to me like they're encouraging "internal" migration from Quebec to other parts of Canada and not migration from, say, France to Canada. One wonders, besides trying to provide yet more evidence that multiculturalism is a failed ideology, what they're trying to do. Is it a desire for cheap laborers? Are they trying to disperse language police throughout the country instead of just having them in certain parts? Perhaps a Canadian expert can tell us what's really involved here.

Most hate crime victims are young, poor, and white

WASHINGTON – The most likely victim of a hate crime in the U.S. is a poor, young, white, single urban dweller, according to an analysis of Justice Department statistics collected from between July 2000 and December 2003.

A November report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics detailing a study of 210,000 "hate crimes" a year during that period has gone virtually unreported by the U.S. press.

But it does contain some surprising numbers. While race is, by far, the No. 1 factor cited as the reason for hate crimes, blacks are slightly less likely to be victims and far more likely to be perpetrators, the statistics show...

Pacific News Service: "Tired of the White Left"

It takes the Pacific News Service to feature a column called "Tired of the White Left":
Editor's Note: NAM contributor Roberto Lovato is attending the World Social Forum in Caracas, where more than 60,000 people, half of them from outside Venezuela, have gathered for the annual event. His impressions will be posted throughout the week.

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Standing proudly beneath the statue of Latin American liberator, Simon Bolivar, located at the center of a Caracas plaza, World Social Forum delegate Dorothea Manuela says she feels more at home here than she does standing near the statues of dead white revolutionary men dotting parks back home in Boston.

"It's inspiring to come here and see people from all over the world leading their own struggles," she says. I ask her about the leadership of struggles in the United States and the beaming smile of the self-described "black woman who is ethnically Puerto Rican" disappears.

"Being here reminds me how very important it is for all of us to change the U.S. But we can't change the U.S. unless we all deal with the white left's racism and privilege" says the statuesque "fifty plus" Manuela. Along with members of her Boston-based Rosa Parks Coalition, Manuela and many of the World Social Forum delegation from the U.S. are delivering a strong message to the thousands attending the global gathering: We (nonwhites/people of color) can lead ourselves. Whites do not speak for all of us...

...The racial dynamics at the Foro seem more like the dynamics on the field of the World Cup, where the non-white majority exercise leadership concomitant with their numbers, while whites have their place too. The tenor here touches on a shift in the way movements have historically been carried out in the U.S. "Why don't they come here to Latin America to lead struggles here?" asks Dorothea Manuela. "Because they know they can't. Why do they lead struggles in places where they are now a minority? Because we let them – and that has to change. That will change."

Another World Is Possible.
How sad. But, I guess if the white left revolutionary vanguard is of the wrong color than new leaders of the proper color must be found. It's time they knew their place. I guess Katrina vanden Heuvel will have to find a new proletariat to champion.

In other sad news, we learn that, supposedly, no one talked to Cindy Sheehan at an event at which she had supposedly received top billing.

Bellwood, IL: school kids beat up UPS driver

A UPS driver was beaten up by 15 to 20 school-age kids who surrounded his vehicle in Bellwood Illinois. Video at the link. They apparently came from a nearby middle school. Are we Brazil yet?

The driver appears to be white, and based on the demographics there's an 80% chance that the perps were black.

Your assignment:
1. Spot the first "liberal" who claims the driver had it coming.
2. Spot the first "liberal" who claims the perps are just misunderstood.
3. Assuming my presumption above is correct, spot all the "liberals" who will not even consider this to have been a hate crime, but who would have rushed to call it that if the (presumed) races were reversed.

Ex-ACLU attorney: Group 'terrorizing' U.S.

From this:
An attorney who once worked for the American Civil Liberties Union has slammed the organization for "perverting" federal law by successfully threatening government officials into getting rid of public expressions of religion.

Rees Lloyd made the comments in an online podcast hosted by Rep. John Hostettler, R-Ind., in which the two discuss the congressman's legislation, the Public Expression of Religion Act, or PERA (H.R.2679). The bill would prohibit judges in civil suits involving the First Amendment's Establishment Clause from awarding attorney's fees to those offended by religious symbols or actions in the public square – such as a Ten Commandments display in a courthouse or a cross on a county seal...

"They use this statute to extort behavior out of individuals," the congressman said, citing the Indiana Civil Liberties Union threatening local educators. The group sent a letter to officials saying they would be sued and be forced to pay attorney's fees should any graduation prayers be offered at commencement ceremonies. The threat sent the message, Hostettler said, that individuals tied to school districts could be impoverished personally...

The congressman wonders why the ACLU would oppose his legislation since it still provides for "injunctive relief" – e.g., a court can rule in the ACLU's favor and force the removal of a Ten Commandments display – but takes out the monetary incentive for lawsuits.

"If they're not out for the money but are really out to preserve our civil liberties … then the ACLU should not be opposing my bill," Hostettler commented...

"Police tell Christian couple view on gays 'close to hate crime'"

From England, Land of Orwell, comes yet another disturbing story about "liberalism" run amok.
POLICE questioned a retired couple for 80 minutes about their "homophobic" views after they asked their local council if they could display their Christian literature next to gay rights leaflets, it was reported last night.

Joe and Helen Roberts said that police officers warned them that their actions "were close to a hate crime" after they complained to Wyre Borough Council about its gay rights policies.

The couple claimed that the police told them they were "walking on eggshells".

Mr Roberts, from Fleetwood, Lancashire, said he had been offended because of the council's distribution of the gay rights leaflets and its promotion of its theatre as a venue for civil partnership ceremonies.

He said he complained to Paul Deacon, the council officer responsible for Wyre's part in the Navajo Charter Mark campaign being run by several local authorities to offer assistance to gay and lesbian people.

Mr Roberts, 73, told the Daily Mail: "I told him I was offended. I asked him if I could put Christian literature on display alongside the gay material. He said I couldn't because it would offend gay people.

"I said we had no objection to gay people, but we thought that homosexual practice was wrong and we were offended by the gay culture which the council is promoting.

"They warned me that being discriminatory and homophobic is in line with hate crime. The phrase they used was that we were 'walking on eggshells'. I asked the officer, if I phoned the police with a complaint that the council were discriminating against Christians would he go to interview them?"

Lancashire police said its visit to the Robertses' family home was a matter of routine after a complaint from the council. A spokesman added: "Words of suitable advice were given and we will not be taking any further action."

Examples of PBS's "liberal" propaganda

Is the Associated Press a trustworthy source?

Look at the following screengrab of an AP report reprinted at WRAL and let me know:

can you trust the associated press

At post time, the headline is "White Supremacists Riot In Toledo, Ohio", and the first paragraph is:

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Protesters at a white supremacists' march threw rocks at police, vandalized vehicles and stores and cursed the mayor for allowing the event.

If you read the link, you'll see that the rest of the story directly contradicts the headline: it was the presumably all or mostly all black residents who rioted, not the Nazis. There were reportedly 600 or more people in the crowd, including an unstated number of rioters. However, there were at "least two dozen" Nazis, and the article doesn't report them rioting.

And, this is clearly an AP-supplied headline: the exact same headline and first paragraph appears here and here. ABC even publishes what appears to be an earlier-posted version of the same article here (note the lower ID number); the only difference is that the headline of that is "Emergency Declared After Anti-Nazi Riots".

And, note that the questionably-headlined ABC report even has a subtitle of "Mayor of Toledo, Ohio, Declares Emergency, Sets Curfew After Hundreds of White Supremacists Riot".

I sent an email to feedback *at* ap.org asking them how they could make this mistake and I'll update this report in the unlikely event I get a response.

While no one wants to defend Nazis, everyone needs to defend their right to peaceably assemble. If someone isn't going to do that, perhaps they should consider their citizenship options.

I believe the problem here is that the AP wants First Amendment protections for themselves, but isn't willing to extend that right to others with whom they disagree. Perhaps the AP as well as the residents of Toledo should attend the same Remedial Constitution class.

When race-baiting goes awry

ABC is broadcasting some shows with an additional Spanish-language audio track available through the SAP channel. That's caused some people to complain, and, of course, professional Hispanics have a response. A column by one Roger Hernandez displays some of the anti- response in order to make a point. Of course, trying to use a few quotes in order to portray all opponents in a bad light is fallacious reasoning, but it's all Hernandez has at his disposal:

"There's nothing like aiding and abetting the detioration (sic) of American civialization (sic) than promoting a freakin' (sic) prime-time foreign language," wrote one poster at right-wing cyber-rag FreeRepublic.com, in a language with a grammatical structure and spelling system not entirely the same as English's.

Those wacky FReepers. Or, actually, one FReeper who can't spel that gud.

Said someone else at Drudge Report: "Speak english (sic) or sink to the bottom. Tolerance has gotten us into the mess we are in - it will take big dose of intolerance to get us out."

Now, here's where it begins to go awry, as you no doubt have figured out already. As you know, Brother Matt does not have a forum or comments. In fact, our fallacious reasoner is referring to this thread at the Drudge Retort. Has he been reading drudge.com all this time, thinking that it was that Drudge Report he'd heard about?

One consistent theme revealed the influence of the My-Ancestors-Learned-Why-Don't-Yours school of American history. "When my parents came to this country, they expected to learn English. They expected me to learn English. They didn't expect people to print government forms, building signs, etc. in Yiddish." Wonder what that descendant of Yiddish-speakers thinks of an ideological ally in the same forum who had the following succinct explanation for the evil of Spanish on American TV: "ABC OWNED BY JEWS. End of story!"

Oddly enough, I was unable to find that comment on that Drudge Retort page. The only thing I found through google was this from 7/29/05:

ABC owned by Jews, just like everything TV. End of Story.

Gosh, that's odd.

"Final solution" on CSPAN Million Man March coverage; DUmmies defend Farrakhan

The unverified report here discusses a CSPAN broadcast from 10/14/05 entitled "Hurricane Katrina & Issues Facing African Americans." It was part of their Million Man March coverage.

One of the speakers on CSPAN (Kamau Kambon, author and owner of Blacknificent Books) reportedly said this, according to the rough transcript at the link:

"Now how do I know that the white people know that we are going to come up with a solution to the problem. I know it because they have retina scans, racial profiling, DNA banks, and they’re monitoring our people to try to prevent the ONE person from coming up with the ONE idea. And the one idea is, how we are going to exterminate white people because that in my estimation is the only conclusion I have come to. We have to exterminate white people off the face of the planet to solve the problem. *tepid applause* Now I don’t care whether you clap or not but I’m saying to you that we need to solve this problem because they are going to kill us. And I will leave on that. So we just have to set up our own system and stop playing and get very serious and not get diverted from coming up with a solution to the problem and the problem on the planet is white people."

Discussing this AP report of the March itself (which doesn't mention the above remarks), the DUmmies do an intricate but most unsubtle dance around "liberal" racism, including this:

99% of what was said by Farrakan today I have read at DU in many threads.

Of that I have no doubt.

Massachusetts Public Schools Requiring Teachers to Wear "Gay and Lesbian Coming Out Day" support Ribbons?

October 11 was "Gay and Lesbian Coming Out Day". According to this second-hand report from a hitherto unknown site:

My friend -- who works as a "permanent substitute teacher" -- was presented with her ribbon upon reporting to school yesterday and "strongly urged" to wear it.

If confirmed, this could be dynamite! Except, of course, it would all be explained away and ignored by the MSM.

"How does it feel to be a black guy that can swim?"

Here's an essay on "liberal" hypocrisy:
...The cover of last March's Sports Illustrated on Campus featured a picture of Eastern Michigan basketball player Henry Bekkering with a caption that read, "How does it feel to be a white guy with hops?"

...And what else would you expect? Everyone knows white kids can't play.

But imagine if the cover had featured something equally as stereotypical about another race.

What if MAAC Diver of the Year Chris Coles were featured on the cover with the caption, "How does it feel to be a black guy that can swim?"

Or Dallas Cowboys linebacker Dat Nguyen asking, "How does it feel to be a yellow guy that can tackle?"

Or what if PGA star Vijay Singh were on the cover and the caption read, "How does it feel to be a red guy that can drive a golf ball 300 yards?"

After his mandatory racial-sensitivity training course, the editor of the magazine would be looking for a new job tomorrow.

But it's all fun and games as long as it's white guys we are talking about.

Sometimes, the blind eye we turn to racist comments about white people isn't quite so innocent, however...

Oklahoman brings kids to Brooklyn to experience "diversity"; kids beaten, called "cracker"

I'm sure you could have seen that coming from a mile away, and the NYDN has the details here (or here):
City education officials are investigating the claims of a pair of boys from Oklahoma who moved to Brooklyn to experience diversity, and instead say they got schooled in racism and violence.

Mom Lisa Brown, 33, told the Daily News she relocated her family from their small Oklahoma town so her husband, a Brooklyn native and social worker, could more easily find work and her sons could experience different people and ways of life.

Brown enrolled her sons, Sloan, 12, and J.T., 13, at Ebbets Field Middle School in Crown Heights. But when the boys, who are white, showed up, their mom said, they got a chilling indication of what was to come.

"Oh my gosh, we are going to have fun this year," a security guard muttered, according to Brown.

Things quickly got worse.

Sloan was beaten mercilessly, called "cracker" and "white boy," and chased into traffic by his new classmates, his family said...
You won't believe what happened next! Oh, sorry, I forgot you're familiar with "multiculturalism". Yes, you're right. The school officials did nothing until this got press attention. And, none of NYC's "civil rights" or "human rights" organizations are involved. And, yes, the victims will eventually be blamed and perhaps even called "racists". And, of course, this whole story will fall down the "liberal" memory hole since, well, see, it's like this...

Put a fork in England, it's done

LONDON, England (CNN) -- British prison officers who wore a St. George's Cross tie-pin have been ticked off by the jails watchdog over concerns about the symbol's racist connotations.

The pins showing the English flag -- which has often raised hackles due to its connection with the Crusades of the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries -- could be "misconstrued," Chief Inspector of Prisons Anne Owers said in a section on race in a report on a jail in the northern English city of Wakefield.

The banner of St. George, the red cross of a martyr on a white background, was adopted for the uniform of English soldiers during the military expeditions by European powers to recapture the Holy Land from Muslims, and later became the national flag of England.

A section on race relations in Owers' report said: "We were concerned to see a number of staff wearing a flag of St. George tie-pin.

"While we were told that these had been bought in support of a cancer charity there was clear scope for misinterpretation, and Prison Service Orders made clear that unauthorized badges and pins should not be worn."

As one of her formal recommendations Owers said: "Staff should not wear unauthorized badges or pins..."

Oz: Uni appoints "Heterosexuality Officer"

The University of New England in Australia (huh?) has appointed law student Dave Allen to be their new "Heterosexuality Officer". Even in an Oddly Enough report, the AP can't help but show their biases:
He's a little vague on what his official duties will be. But it looks like the student association is trying to make a point about gay rights and supposed special treatment for homosexual students.

Allen says he has nothing against gays. He tells The Australian newspaper they should come down to the local pub and have a few beers with him.

African-American Rep. wants to join Tennessee's White Caucus

This article is extremely shocking:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A black Tennessee lawmaker lamenting his exclusion from the state's White Legislative Caucus claimed Tuesday the group was less accommodating that even the Nation of Islam.

"My understanding is that the NoI doesn't even ban members by race," said Rep. Stacey Campfield, adding that the NoI "has less racist bylaws" than the white lawmakers' group.

The freshman Democrat from Knoxville was rebuffed earlier this year when he asked for the White Caucus' bylaws and inquired about joining. There are 18 white state lawmakers in Tennessee.

Caucus chairman Rep. Johnny Shaw, a Republican, dismissed Campfield's request and called him a "strange guy" who was simply interested in stirring up trouble.

"He is using this as a joke. This is an insult coming from him," said caucus member Rep. Larry Miller, also a Republican. "Why he chose to focus on the White Caucus, I have no idea other than he is crazy and a racist."
If you've heard of this story, you'll notice that I switched things around above. Rep. Stacey Campfield is actually white, and he inquired about the bylaws of TN's Black Caucus. That prompted the expected "liberal" reaction.

For instance, the WaPo prints the above modified AP article by Matt Gouras under "White Lawmaker Likens Black Colleagues, KKK". And, Gouras turned to a usual suspect to provide more smears:
Experts on race and hate groups said Campfield hit a nerve when he used King's words to take on a black institution. It's the same tactic white separatists often use, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center.

"Very typically these days we see white supremacists, hate groups, trying to use the words of King and other civil rights leaders to try to advance their agendas," Potok said.
Question "liberal" racism, get called a racist. Not only that, but on his blog he says he's received threats of violence. Ah, the peace-loving, non-racist left.

Let's take a look at an earlier AP report, here under "White lawmaker 'just curious' about joining Black Caucus":
...As he was talking to [Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Johnny Shaw] about these questions, the possibility of Campfield joining the Black Caucus came up.

By Campfield's account, Shaw was against it.

"I said, 'Why?' and he said, 'Because you're white.' I thought, 'What? Whoa!' " Campfield said...

...Shaw said he thought Campfield had brought up the possibility of membership in the Black Caucus in "a kidding sort of way."

"He's an oddball, and I didn't take him seriously," Shaw said. "I felt like he was trying to do something that was, well, not good."

"We don't have anything going on in the Black Caucus that anyone wants to hide. There's nothing out of the ordinary in the bylaws," Shaw said. "We are strictly legit and up front."

The bylaws [provided to the reporter but not to Campfield] say, "The regular membership shall consist of those black elected officials serving in the state Senate and House of Representatives."

Another provision says that "honorary membership" can be granted to "those persons whose belief and actions contribute to the purpose for which this caucus was formed."

"We still want to make sure the black community gets the representation it needs," Shaw said. "But it's not just the black community. We represent people as a whole. When you start dividing people up into race, if you're not careful you can get yourself into a lot of trouble."
Perhaps Gouras should have read - and referenced - the earlier AP report containing that zinger. And, needless to say, if I switched things around in that article it would sound like something from the 50s or before.

Far-lefties pushing Gramscism on 5-year-olds in Massachusetts

Here's a test. Is the following report from Massachusetts in 2005, or from the Soviet Union in 1965 and I've just changed the names and locations? You decide:
While the trial of a Massachusetts parent arrested while attempting to secure a promise from school officials to notify parents before teaching about homosexuality in his son's kindergarten class has been postponed until next month, the school district is taking a hard line against such notification.

Paul Ash, the superintendent of schools in Lexington, has announced his instructions to all teachers in the district to give no notice to parents of efforts to teach "diversity" lessons about "alternative lifestyles" – even in primary grades.

In April, David Parker of Lexington spent a night in jail and was charged with criminal trespassing after refusing to leave a scheduled meeting with officials [over the policy]...
What kind of lessons were involved?
...Parker's then-5-year-old son brought home a book to be shared with his parents titled, "Who's in a Family?" The optional reading material, which came in a "Diversity Book Bag," depicted at least two households led by homosexual partners.

The illustrated book says, "A family can be made up in many different ways" and includes this text:

"Laura and Kyle live with their two moms, Joyce and Emily, and a poodle named Daisy. It takes all four of them to give Daisy her bath."

Another illustrated page says:

"Robin's family is made up of her dad, Clifford, her dad's partner, Henry, and Robin's cat, Sassy. Clifford and Henry take turns making dinner for their family."
Answer: no, this is actually from Massachusetts in the United States. If it had been the Soviet Union, Parker would be in Siberia by now, and "liberals" haven't gotten to that point yet.

Lawyer objects to legally correct term "illegal alien"

Westchester County NY's Reeducation Roadshow - more formally known as the "Stop Prejudice Now listening tour" - visited Spring Valley and discussed immigration matters. Based only on the report available in "Immigrant activists speak" I'm going to assume that this is a far-left, Gramscian attempt to open up the borders. It does however includes this humorous bit:
[Westchester Human Rights Commissioner S. Ram Nagubandi] received a number of thoughtful replies and practical suggestions, in addition to the idea that county employees be trained. One, from [attorney Vicki] Cohen, was straightforward.

"One thing that we can certainly do is try to eliminate the phrase 'illegal alien,'" she said. "It's an outrageous phrase."
Needless to say, the term "illegal alien" appears multiple times in the U.S. Code, something which (I'd hope) Cohen is familiar with. On the other hand, "undocumented" does not appear.

Latinos: the new Model Minority to keep Pittsburgh strong!

Richard Delgado is university distinguished professor of law and Derrick Bell fellow and Jean Stefancic is research professor of law and Derrick Bell scholar at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where they teach courses on race and civil rights.

Now, they offer us a slice of all-American thinking entitled "Let's welcome Latinos to Pittsburgh". If you thought George Bush talks like he's in the fifth grade, step back a grade or two and enjoy the racialist thinking from the cream of academia:
Pittsburgh needs more Latinos. Pious, industrious, roll-up your-sleeve immigrants from Mexico and Central America, raring to work at jobs like construction, food processing, restaurants and old age homes, save their money, send their kids to school, move up the ladder and relive the American dream...

...Latinos love working in the construction industry...

...Imagine what it would do for this region if you could remodel your house for $23,000, not $30,000; or eat a fine restaurant meal for $14, not $18; if your kids could go to a neighborhood school instead of one a mile away because the local one closed...

...Construction foremen, restaurant owners and hotel managers love Latinos, who enjoy a reputation for working hard, not complaining and showing up on time...

...In some parts of the country, every work site features Latino and non-Latino workers working together to build houses, repair roads, and make things grow. Wouldn't it be nice if Pittsburgh had more of this? [Oh! What a wonderful dream, even if it sounds like it was written by and for five-year-olds -- LW]

...Latinos, with their strong work ethic and traditional respect for elders, are the logical choice, both nationally and here.
The authors are literally race pimps, demeaning not only those of the same race as they, but other races as well. Now, let's try an alternate version of their article. Tell me what you think about this:
Pittsburgh needs more Whites. Pious, industrious, roll-up your-sleeve immigrants from Europe, raring to work at jobs like construction, food processing, restaurants and old age homes, save their money, send their kids to school, move up the ladder and relive the American dream...

...Construction foremen, restaurant owners and hotel managers love Whites, who enjoy a reputation for working hard, not complaining and showing up on time...

...Whites, with their strong work ethic and traditional respect for elders, are the logical choice, both nationally and here.
Now, of course, if Richard Delgado said that he'd be a racist, now wouldn't he?

Is "color is cool and white is washed out" racist?

The L.A. Times offers us "Networks Have an Ear for Spanish". After several other disturbing quotes, it ends with this wonderful statement:

["Gary Bassell, chief executive of the Bravo Group, a New York advertising agency that specializes in reaching Latinos"] predicts that if handled deftly, such themes could appeal not just to Latinos, but to young people of all ethnicities "who've been shaped by an American pop culture today that increasingly proves that color is cool and white is washed out."

In the world of "liberalism", that is not an extremely racist statement. Therefore, if you object to that extremely racist statement, don't support "liberals".

Sadler Elementary School and Reeducation Camp

Jan P. Hall was, until last week, a fifth-grade teacher at Sadler Elementary in Orange County, Florida. She was suspended for allegedly writing a "racist" letter to an unknown congressman. She hasn't admitted writing the letter, no copy of the original letter has been printed, and it's also questionable whether the content of the letter itself is "racist" or whether it's just politically incorrect but largely fact-based. There are also questions of the First Amendment here, but don't expect the ACLU to get involved. How did the letter become public knowledge? Is she allowed to send a letter to her congressman without worrying about political repercussions? Can the school district take action against her for her political speech? How far will the teacher's union go to defend her and protect her right to speak?

Several links about this are here. Jan Hall wrote the letter in English, but so far the only copy made available is one that was printed in El Nuevo Dia; it was translated into Spanish before being printed there. An automatic translation into English is here. Without seeing the original version, it's difficult to go through it point-by-point and find out what's "racist" and what's uncomfortable fact.

"Teacher faces hearing on letter" has more on this modern-day witch hunt:
The letter, supposedly written to a congressman, complained that Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Haitians, Middle Easterners and others should not be allowed to stay in the country. The letter denigrated the education of Puerto Rican teachers and stated that "Puerto Rican children are holding back American children academically."
Is there evidence to support that assertion or not? Don't expect the school district to seek the truth, that would be "insensitive." What about the training of Puerto Rican teachers, as mentioned in "Teacher's suspension roils district"? Are they indeed weak in math? Is there evidence for or against that?
...[A parent] said she took offense when Hall suggested her daughter be evaluated for a learning disability. A final blow was that Hall directed her daughter to special-education classes and then to repeat the fifth grade...
Perhaps that student should be reevaluated then. If it turns out that Hall was incorrect, then there's a problem. If not, will she get her job back?
...However, another parent of a Sadler student said she had no complaints about the woman who taught her 11-year-old granddaughter...

The woman she met in the classroom did not seem like the one being portrayed as a racist on the six o'clock news, Brown said. The letter was published Wednesday in the Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día.

"It's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," Brown said. "I had met her. She wasn't arrogant or nothing. All the teachers were nice in that school. I have no complaints."

...Sadler Principal Anne Lynaugh seemed ambivalent Friday as she spoke about the case that disrupted her school's operations.

Lynaugh reported Hall to the school district for investigation and was the administrator to whom Hall confirmed that she had written such a letter. Although Lynaugh has condemned the contents of the letter, she described Hall as an "excellent teacher."

The principal said she had received no complaints about Hall, and that she was "a caring professional" committed to children...
And, from this:
Manuel Rodríguez, who identified himself as one of Hall's students, told El Nuevo Dia that during a social studies class last week, the teacher said that "Colombians bring drugs (to the country)." "I was very offended by what she said, because I am Colombian. That is not true about the people of my country," said the ten-year-old boy.

He added that he felt sad to some extent, because "she was a good teacher and she gave me an "A" in everything.” But on the other hand, he was glad she was sanctioned, "because I didn't like her talking like that about Colombians."
At Sadler Elementary School, apparently we're to forget that Columbia is indeed one of the major drug-supplying countries. Just forget about that. It's not true. Look, a witch!

Now with 20% more Asian content!

virginia fields campaign flyer airbrush Picture to the right are NYC mayoral candidate Virginia Fields and her supporters. The bottom photo was produced from the top by Photoshopping in two Asians who were not supporters. Apparently the airbrushing was done by her direct mail company. (Via this).

From "C. Virginia Fields tries damage control over doctored photo":
Ominously, Fields refused to rule out the existence of other doctored photos, saying her staff was looking into the matter.

The presser had a weird Watergate aura, with a rattled Fields saying she wanted to make it "perfectly clear" no wrongdoing had been done, TV reporters inexplicably referring to her as "Madam President" and one TV person asking her "who ... knew what, when?"
On a more serious note, Fields supports non-citizen voting.

And, her opponent Fernando Ferrer is a buddy of former MEChA member and current Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

And, in other pandering news, "Mayor Mike fully supports illegal immigration".

Canada signs "cyberhate" law, now as bad as China

Last week Canada joined Europe in fulfilling Orwell's nightmare: "Canada signs protocol to fight 'cyberhate'". According to Canada's Justice Minister Irwin Cotler:

"No one country alone can combat racist hate, particularly cyberhate... This is an anonymous, borderless, faceless crime. We've gone from five hate sites on the Internet in 1995 to 5,000 in 2005. These are horrific sites. They're used for purposes of recruitment. They particularly target the young. It is predatory hate of the worst kind... We believe that incitement to hatred is the most proximate cause of terrorism itself. Therefore, if you're combating incitement to hatred, you're combating terrorism..."

I haven't read the law, but CNN defines "cyberhate" as "the online dissemination of xenophobic propaganda". All you need to do is look at all the times that "liberals" attempt to smear people and statements as "xenophobia" to see just how dangerous this is.

A note to my Canadian friends/mes amis Canadienne:
Welcome! Je vous encourage de lutter cette loi avec toutes votres forces! Dit <<non>> a la thoughtcrime!

Welcome! I encourage you to fight this law with all your might! Say "No" to thoughtcrime!

Bloggers and other may have to consider blocking Canadian access to their sites unless this is overturned.

(On a literally parenthetical note: If you want to see how bad G's SERPs suck, search for 'Orwell'. Wow. I ended up linking to WP since I didn't want to scroll any further down.)

More "liberal" racism

Pennsylvania Rep. Thomas Yewcic of Cambria County in SW PA was speaking in PA's house in favor of a bill that would allow members of homeowner's associations to fly American flags even if the covenants prohibited it:

"I don't think we should be embarrassed or ashamed to support the American flag or what it represents," Yewcic said. "If any ethnic group wants to fly ... a flag, and they're embarrassed to fly an American flag, they should go back to their ethnic origins and fly it there."

Yewcic is white, and that prompted Philadelphia's Rep. John Myers, who's black, to utter the following:

"I think that those type of remarks would come from a cracker"

Not only that, he followed it up with an "apology":

"I'm hearing my colleague. I appreciate him standing up and being a man, and I'd like to do the same thing. I'm sorry for referring to him as a cracker..."

According to the AP, the last prompted "hoots of laughter mixed with boos." The same or a similar AP report is in the S.F. Chronical, but note that they edited out the full explanation of the "apology." And, you can see "liberals" supporting this use of the word "cracker" here.

In previous reports, you can see a very similar reaction to the use of that racial epithet from the DUmmies here. And, you can read about Al Franken's "liberal" racism here.

Colorblind casting, indeed

AP:
When Jackie Gleason was growing up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn in the 1930s, many of his neighbors resembled his family, Irish and working-class. Today, the residents remain mostly working-class, but almost all are black.

Perhaps, then, it makes sense that a film remake of Gleason's classic TV comedy "The Honeymooners" would feature a mostly black cast, with Cedric the Entertainer as the new face of loudmouthed Ralph Kramden.

The film, which opens in theaters Friday, reflects a growing trend in recent years called cross-casting - casting minorities in roles originally played by whites...

Colorblind casting in remakes, some say, is a hopeful sign that Hollywood executives are increasingly understanding that talented actors of color can fill prominent roles - and drive ticket sales...
Obviously - obvious to everyone but the AP - this isn't colorblind casting. This is about the money: apparently that studio decided that they'd make more money with this configuration than with, say, Alec Baldwin as Ralph and Janeane Garofalo as Alice (just to choose two names). Also, let me know when - for instance - The Color Purple is remade with an all-Bollywood cast.

Minneapolisians celebrate diversity, global connectedness, sweetness, light

The wife (Megan O'Hara) of the mayor of Minneapolis (R.T. Rybak) offers us a wonderful, heartwarming, life-affirming lesson that's not just about that city's Minneapolis MOSAIC Arts Festival, it's about how absolutely wonderful immigration is. If you haven't yet had your daily cup of treacle, dip into "Our urban culture reflects heritage of immigrants":
Immigrants have come from across the world to leave their mark on Minneapolis. French fur traders and European settlers made their living in trade with the Native Americans living here for millennia. One hundred years ago it was Swedes, Norwegians and Eastern Europeans... [etc. etc. etc.]

...Despite a Minnesota tradition of welcome and strong social services, recent surveys have shown a strain in the fabric of generosity in our state. Some Minnesotans worry that immigrants put too high a burden on our public services and take our jobs.
Ah hah! I knew this editorial had a point. Apparently some Minnesotans - xenophobes all - are trying to inject some reality into O'Hara's multiculti fantasy world.
But if the post-9/11 world has shown us anything, it is that we live in state of global connectedness. As trade barriers have fallen and immigration has risen, the faces we see all around us are part of the new economy and the new society...
In other words, like it or not, this is what we're going to do, so you might as well just get used to it. As for the 9/11 bit, that's verging awfully close into Ward Churchill territory.
[...she goes on...] There is no better way to understand each other than to revel in the songs, drumming, dance, theater and spoken traditions of our neighbors. But it's not just celebrating diversity, it is celebrating our common life... [...she goes on some more...]
Think of her as a condescending, useful idiot, Sally Struthers of globalization and free trade.

I'll stipulate that immigration is great, if people like O'Hara are willing to fully disclose exactly why they and their associates are so much in favor of it and are willing to discuss the downsides as well.

Berkeley to be renamed Ramseyville

Parents, staff, and students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Berkeley, CA recently voted to change the name of their school to... Sequoia Elementary School. The name change still needs to be approved by the school board:

The drive to change the name of Jefferson Elementary School was launched more than two years ago by Marguerite Talley-Hughes, an African-American teacher, and two other teachers who felt the name was offensive because the nation's third president was a slave owner.

Talley-Hughes did not return calls for comment Wednesday but said in an earlier interview, "I think it's difficult to ask people to accept someone as a hero who enslaved their ancestors..."
Other candidates for the name change included:
Ohlone, Rose, Peace;... farm worker organizer Cesar Chavez; Ralph Bunche, a United Nations diplomat; Sojourner Truth, a leader in the abolitionist movement; and Florence McDonald, a former Berkeley City Council member...
What's slightly funny here is that the city of Berkeley was named after Bishop George Berkeley. And - surprise! - he was a slave owner. More on that here. Perhaps they could rename the whole city after Ramsey Clark. Or - even closer to home - how about Susanmedeabenjaminton?

What's not funny about this is that - whether intended or not - it's part of a general trend of trashing America's past towards anti-American ends. See "Gramscian Methods Broadly Defined!" for more.

What's missing from this picture?

Can anyone tell me what's missing from the picture here?

Here's a hint. It's not missing from the pictures here or here. It's not missing from this large and not exactly pleasing picture. This picture is not missing that unknown factor, and the left-hand side of it is quite a bit better as well. The unknown factor is not missing from here, nor here, nor here nor here. As you can see from the last few links, that unstated factor is even available in clipart form. And, here's that unknown factor in GIF form.

I could care less about what some pizza chain in Texas does. But, if you asked a "liberal" to explain why the first picture is not like the others, well, I'm sure you can imagine the reaction. Words like "historical oppression" and "mean-spirited" would flow like water. So, I'm just providing yet another example of "liberal" hypocrisy, albeit being hypothetical in this case.

"Too Controversial for the University of Denver"

Former CO Gov. Richard Lamm was a professor at the University of Denver before he became governor, and he returned there afterwards. At some unspecified date in the past he wrote an article entitled "Two Wands" that "was in response to a particularly offensive screed on white racism by one of our affirmative action officials. I felt it should not go unanswered."

However, it was repeatedly turned down for publication in the campus newspaper, from the lowest rungs to the chancellor of the university. He refused to publish the article as well. However, last year a journal published it, and you can read it here. Send it to the "liberals" you know.

No, Jackie Goldberg doesn't have anything better to do

The L.A. Times article "'Redskins' Face Possible Statewide Ban" describes CA state Assymbmn. Jackie Goldberg's attempts to forbid school teams being named after Indians. A stomach-churning taste:
Dozens of civil rights groups and Indian tribes have endorsed the measure. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has endorsed a broad ban...

Goldberg has been backed by the Alliance Against Racial Mascots, a group that seeks the elimination of American Indian mascots, logos, team names and nicknames in all California schools and educational institutions...

"The genius of America is not about majority rules, it's that the minority is not allowed to be stomped on just because they have smaller numbers. That's a very different approach than most other countries in the world," Goldberg said. "We give that up every time we say, 'Gee, people like the name Redskins.' "

Caption this pic!

Please caption this picture:

Now, caption this picture:

(Via the suddenly disreputable Captain Kevin Drum)

The second picture is of a robot jockey being tested in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The Captain says about as much about this as I do, but it's quite possible he's more interested in the neat-o techology of robot jockeys than the subtext. Of course, if it were, say, Swedes who gathered around a robot jockey who looked like the first picture, then and only then would we expect some outrage.

As for me, I'm less outraged than I am interested in the cultural subtext.

And, I'm wondering why the jockey has red lips.

Yes, it was apparently the victim's fault

DALLAS -- A high school teacher faces an assault charge after police say she walked into a middle-school classroom, grabbed a teacher's hair, yanked her out of her chair and dragged her across the room while punching her in the face and kicking her. According to the police report, Paulette Baines grabbed Mary Oliver in front of a class full of gifted students Friday. Baines was angry because Oliver told her daughter to quit loitering by lockers and go to class, Dallas school district spokesman Donald Claxton said. Oliver said Baines was yelling at her as she entered the classroom. "I want you to know I didn't raise a finger. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't do anything to aggravate the situation," Oliver said...

And, that would be the end of that tale. Except, the alleged assaultor Baines is black and the alleged victim Oliver is white.

In a low point in MSM commentary, that results in "Scott Parks: Is trouble at Travis a matter of race?" Apparently, it was Oliver's fault for what happened, and a new round of sensitivity training will be required (after Oliver recovers from her injuries, of course.)

PETA's Horrible Secret

From September 3, 2003:

We all know that PETA is quite possibly the most annoying and certainly the most arrogant of all the leftist groups currently attempting to alter our way of life. However, I doubt that outside of a few nosy people and former PETA employees anyone knows how they care for homeless pets in Hampton Roads, Virginia (their headquarters, right)...They kill them!

That's right, this warm fuzzy bastion of animal rights kills every once beloved family pet who has the misfortune of being carried through PETA's doors. People take animals to PETA instead of local shelters because they believe that they will be placed into a home and will not be put down. Unlike local animal shelters, PETA doesn't even bother trying to find homes for these pets. All of them are killed within a few hours. In fact, PETA has gone through several area vets, and they refused to euthanize healthy animals. Finally PETA constructed their own facilities for this practice...

PETA doesn't stop with animals who are dropped off at their facility. No, they actively seek out animals throughout the community to kill. PETA sets traps to catch roaming animals all over Hampton Roads. These traps are designed to catch cats, many of these are not just strays but people's pets. They have even ventured onto a local federal installation, where they captured dozens of cats and immediately killed them...

"Holy Moses!" you might be saying. Could this be true? Is this a satire, or an urban legend? How could sweet, sweet Lisa Franzetta be mixed up in something like this?

Well, would you believe the Associated Press (for the most part)? This page appears to have a rewrite of an AP article about PETA's policies. And, in fact, PETA has a page that discusses their euthanization policies.

Part 2 of the quoted article is here. It goes into alleged mind-control by PETA of their employees. And, Part 3 is here.

"Heteronormative"? WTF?

Drudge linked to the article "Pinkett Smith’s Remarks Debated" earlier, but I think it deserves its own post here. I just sent out a message to VRWC-l suggesting that all members print it out and use it in their conversion rituals. Even "liberals" will be able to recognize when their side has gone so far they've gone off the edge.

UPDATE: The Boston Herald weighs in:

...While neither group specified what Pinkett Smith said that was so offensive, a previous edition of the Crimson included a quote from the actress from the event at Sanders Theater.

"Women, you can have it all - a loving man, devoted husband, loving children, a fabulous career," she said. "They say you gotta choose. Nah, nah, nah. We are a new generation of women. We got to set a new standard of rules around here. You can do whatever it is you want. All you have to do is want it."

Isn't that Prof. Thomas Klocek behind the gag?

Good guess! That's who it is:

Last fall, DePaul University professor Thomas Klocek was suspended without a hearing for challenging the viewpoints of certain Muslim students on campus at a student activities fair. He is now demanding a public apology from the university president in order to avoid litigation.

Klocek showed up to the news conference bound and gagged, illustrating what he believes the university did to him by censoring his views on the Middle East. Klocek says he was unfairly suspended for his views on the Muslim and Palestinian people...

UPDATE: There's much more about Klocek and one of the people the reporter of this piece interviewed here. Hint: the word "reporterette" is involved.

Blacks, Hispanics to join, fight against other groups

The Houston Chronicle's "Minority groups 'fighting as one': NAACP, LULAC align in symbiotic, and sometimes strained, pursuit of common goals" has all the details:

...The groups took the idea further on Monday in Austin, when LULAC state director Roger Rocha and Texas NAACP President Gary Bledsoe stood side by side on the steps of the Capitol during a rally with 100 members of their organizations.

"We are here together as two organizations, fighting as one," said Rocha. "Everything we've worked so hard for will not go silently into the night."

Bledsoe described Hispanics and blacks as "communities under siege..."

"Do Asian Americans Count in L.A.?"

Raphael J. Sonenshein, "a political scientist at Cal State Fullerton", suggests ways that Asians can achieve the wonders of corporate pluralism in L.A. in "Do Asian Americans Count in L.A.?":

..One way to jump-start Asian American electoral success in L.A. would be to create smaller City Council districts or separate boroughs, with their own elected councils, but such ideas may never materialize. More immediately, the city's new neighborhood councils provide leadership opportunities with a real electoral future, and these positions could supplement current Asian American civic participation as public employees, community activists and members of city boards and commissions...

Perhaps Sonenshein should take a field trip up north to find out how they're doing it: "Oakland's Bilingualism - No Americans Need Apply".

Debbie Schlussel and Deep Throat

It's not so much a dream I had, as her latest column describing the new movie "Inside 'Deep Throat'". The column is, frankly, a bit on the bitter side.

For something sweeter, here are some pictures of Debbie Schlussel. Before clicking that link, hold up a piece of cardboard so you can block out Sean Hannity who's unfortunately in both of them.

Su piel es su vota

The LAT wonders why more Latinos are vibed up about the L.A. Mayor's race. After all, aren't not one but two of their own in the race?

Mayor's Race Registers a Big Nada ends with this:

"Villaraigosa is a man of the community, he's one of us," said the 33-year-old laborer. "When he lost, I felt that we as Latinos let him down, because we should have elected him. This time, he is going to win."

Translating that quote into white, black or asian, and dealing with the shitstorm that would follow, is left as an exercise.

"No whites need apply"

From the "liberals" in the frozen north:

CRITICS ARE calling it "craziness" that the Correctional Service of Canada is disqualifying candidates for parole officer jobs because they're white. An Ontario job-seeker received a rejection letter recently, advising that only aboriginals and visible minorities need apply.

"Please be advised that effective immediately the Ontario region of the Correctional Service of Canada is no longer maintaining an inventory for parole of
